I realized I enjoyed what I do when work became something I loved waking up to. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Before operating (and getting paid for it), I did a lot of general construction-related trades. I never really had the motivation to get out of bed in the morning when I was doing that. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
I was around 19 when I saw an ad for an "equipment operator" with no experience necessary and applied. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
I was interviewed and hired, working for one of California’s largest concrete suppliers operating a loader at a quarry. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
You will know you love what you do when there’s that kick in your step every morning! Even though it’s no walk in the park, you’ll know what I’m talking about once you find what makes you happy. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
I found construction to be fascinating in every aspect when I was a kid, but mainly what drew me to it was the heavy equipment. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
The other aspect was that I rode dirt bikes since the age of 5. Building our track out back with our neighbor (now professional golfer Ricky Fowler and his father) with their skip loader. Heavy equipment just always seemed to be the thing my eye always jumped to. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
My advice to those looking to get into the industry: Work for a company that will train or will promote from within! ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
I started as a laborer and am now running a production 374 and d10.. Find companies with positions that are entry-level. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Apply, apply, apply… ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
It might seem hard to find a position with a seat, but if you keep on it, you will get it. I guarantee it. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Start as a laborer, grade checker, pipe layer, etc.. and WORK YOUR ASS OFF. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Eventually, you’ll get a shot in the seat. ⁣⁣
