There’s no “right way” to join the Dirt World, and Missy Scherber is living proof.

She had no dreams of working in construction growing up, and she already had a great job in fundraising. But she became a co-owner and general manager of a construction company.

Making the switch

Missy was working in her fundraising job at a nonprofit. She thought that was her dream job until she met her husband Trevor, who ran a small excavating and dumpster business. She was instantly drawn to him and the business.

“I was fascinated by the people who build our world. I realized that I wanted to be a part of a business that
supports the people who build what our society needs to function,” she said.

Missy quit her nonprofit job and took over managing Trevor's company. As she put it, “I traded my high heels for a pair of boots, and I never looked back.”

Falling in love with construction

Missy loved construction, but above all, she loved the impact they made each day.

She explained, “I got excited about the significance of construction and the legacy you got to create. In fifty years from now, I wanted to be driving down the road saying that I helped build this road, or I helped build that business that people work at every day.”

Missy’s best career advice

Missy's message to you was, “Learn where you want to be, and communicate that to the management and ownership of the company you’re at. That way, they can help put you on the path to where you want to be. Too many young people think they have to sit in the back and be quiet because they don’t know much yet. I say, get in and have fun. Don’t be intimidated!”

If you already have a job—even one you like—maybe it’s time to make a switch! You true dream job could be just around the corner. Check out some of the many great career opportunities you can have in the Dirt World.
